WHAT IS TEEN COACHING?

What is Teen Coaching?

Teen Life Coaching assists teens to become aware of their capabilities, to believe in themselves and to build an authentic life, now and into the future.

Teen Coaching is a professional relationship between a Teen Client and a Teen Coach. In partnership with parents, the relationship works toward positive learning outcomes and accomplishing meaningful and attainable goals.

The Importance of Having a Teen Coach

Most teens feel insecure and self-conscious in their daily lives. There are pressures from school, from home and from friends. They constantly worry about what others think. With a Teen Coach at their side, teens develop the motivation, engagement and confidence to lead their life in an informed and positive way. This helps nurture and develop good decision-makers.

With all the pressures of everyday life, an independent messenger can complement the parent/carer message at home. Working collaboratively with family members, a Teen Coach can give guidance through everyday difficulties and help build resilience for future success.

Coaching vs Therapy/Counselling

Life coaching differs from therapy and counselling in that it doesn’t focus on the past and doesn’t offer the client a diagnosis.

As a Teen Coach, I focus on working with the Teen Client to create deeper awareness. Together, we design actions to improve day-to-day choices and offer workable solutions and resources to make and maintain achievable goals.

Teen Coaching is effective for many reasons, mainly because the relationship is designed to engage the Coach, Parent and Teen as equal partners.

About Teen Coaching

Employing a Teen Coach does not mean there is something wrong with your teen. It is more a matter of helping them understand themselves and the world around them. It’s about nurturing their best bits and supporting them through the tough times, all while assisting them to be accountable for their actions.

Teen Coaching does not require more time and energy`– in fact, it is more likely to save you time and energy. Coaching sessions can ease frustrations and give hope and support to a healthy, lifelong relationship with your teen. You will be able to witness real transformation and growth.

Teen Coaching is led by inspiration and not by force. It empowers both Parent and Teen to have a respectful relationship based on mutual trust and aligned values.

The Benefits of Teen Coaching

While no two Teens are the same, there is a range of benefits experienced by having a Teen Coach, including:

- Increased sense of self

- Boosts confidence and resilience

- Stronger connections and relationships, in and outside the home

- Sharper vision for success

- Broader attention span

- Increased openness to new information

- More engagement

- Positive energy

- Better academic and athletic performance.

The Structure of Teen Coaching

Teen Coaching sessions are conducted weekly and are designed to be 30–60 minutes in duration. The Coach and Teen will discuss the latest goals and strategies while also factoring in the requests of the parent/carer.

The Teen Coaching sessions can be conducted via Zoom or in person at a mutually agreed location. The sessions work most effectively when they are conducted outside the usual setting (i.e. home or school). I encourage the Teen to get out of their comfort zone.

Parents are given clear guidelines and deliverables prior to the commencement of the coaching program. After each session, I send a review to the parent/carer on the session outcomes. If required, a parent can contact me to discuss family dynamics, including any current issues within the family.

Parents also have the opportunity to have the Teen Coach become a point of contact for their school, therapist, or counsellor.

About the Teen Coach – Elizabeth King Coaching

1. The Teen Coaching sessions are confidential.

2. The Teen Coach and Teen Client relationship has less mental-health stigma attached to it – it’s not dissimilar to a sport's coach relationship.

3. You can have Group or Individual Teen Coaching.

4. My fee structure is within the Australia Life Coaching guidelines.

5. Parents pay fees directly. If the school recommends coaching to students and the parents/carers cannot afford the sessions, the school might consider a coaching budget in these instances.
